7 QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN SHOPPING FOR 35MM AND 120 MEDIUM FORMAT FILM DEVELOPING

  1. Are films hand-developed or machine developed? Hand-developed films result in inconsistent results from one developing cycle to another. You never know if it is your photography settings that need an adjustment or if it is the person developing the films. Not a good way to learn film photography if you rely on hand-developed film.

  2. Are your negatives scanned on a Frontier or Noritsu scanner? Scanning on a home flat-bed scanner leaves room for dust to enter, magnifying it in the image. Dust is not a retro look. Seriously. It is dust. Frontier and Noritsu scanners are commercial-grade scanners that minimize (not eliminate) dust and provide excellent resolution. Drum scanning is the best scanning technology but is out of reach for most photographers as the good services start at $25 per frame. Yes, per shot.

  3. Are your negatives returned? Those are tangible proof that you took that photograph. If you want a large-format print, you will need your negatives. They are your pride and joy.

  4. Feedback upon request Is the person developing your film knowledgeable and experienced enough to provide feedback on your images and explain what you need to do to improve your film photography? Are you a newbie to film photography? We get it. We were there, too, and we still are in many aspects of learning. There is no such thing as a dumb or a stupid question. So, if you want us to review the images we developed or printed for you, we are happy to take the time to do so. We want your journey in film photography to be a rewarding one, an exciting one.

  5. Does your lab provide your enhanced scans in 7 days? We do. For C41, we offer an optional 4-day turnaround.

  6. Who can you call or text if you have any questions or problems? We are available Mo-Fr, 11-7p over DM, in-person by appointment or will call you back if you text us at (956) 492-7140.

YOUR NEGATIVES ARE ALWAYS RETURNED TO YOU

You can take your 35mm Film to Walmart or CVS for developing, scanning and, printing but, do you get your negatives back? Your negatives are your physical representation of your priceless images. They are the original and authentic source of your images. If you decide to get a higher resolution scan at a later date to reproduce the negative on a large format print, the only way to do that would be if you had the original negative. Walmart or CVS destroy your negatives after they provide you with digital scans of them. Always go to a Professional Film Photo Lab that will return your negatives to you. We always return the negatives to our Customers as we recognize that things can get lost or deleted in the digital space and the physical negative is the only way to recreate their priceless photographs. If ‘cheap’ is what you are looking for, yes, CVS or Walmart are the options to seek. If you need full-service - where you can call someone knowledgeable about film photography and processing or developing + scanning + printing and speak to them in person or over the phone and get your questions, answered, come to us. If we don’t know the answer, we will find someone that does.
