About La Lomita Chapel: La Lomita (“the little hill”) Chapel stands near the Rio Grande south of Mission, Texas. The first chapel was built in 1865 on René Guyard’s ranch, which he left to the Oblate missionaries; it became a resting stop for the “Cavalry of Christ” — priests who rode on horseback between Brownsville and Roma to serve remote ranches. The chapel was rebuilt at its current site in 1899 with sandstone dug from the nearby hill, and the city of Mission takes its name from it. It is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (1964) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1975).
